Author Interview: Thomas McRae

About the Author

Thirty-three year old Thomas McRae is a self described “stocky African American” man with literary accomplishments and dreams. Having recently self-published a short fiction novel inspired by universal themes – love, pain, failures, and triumphs – McRae discussed himself and his work with us here.

1. When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer or story teller?
Truth be told, I've always been a story teller because in my house I'm always bringing up funny stories from my past or family plus friends.

2. What motivates you to write and where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from my experiences and the people who are in my life. Because everyone has an interesting story to tell, it's just on how you deliver the message along with the punch line.

3. Do you suffer from writer's block? If so, what do you do about it?
When I write poetry I have more writers block than usual. But not so much with my novels; I read over every line repeatedly until something fresh and new comes out and sounds good enough to put on paper for any of my writings. It’s all about delivering a message and keeping an upbeat tone through each line and syllable.

4. Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?
Honestly, I like short fiction novels especially the ones that get straight to the point like the ones I have written.

5. Are you a traditional or self-published writer and what process did you go through to get your book published?
I'm a self publishing author who has worked hard to get where he is. I been turned down by every traditional book publisher that I can think of. But I never gave up. My first self publishing company, Author House, was a financial money pit disaster. In other words, I don't recommend them because they are all about profiting off you and selling you a bunch of lies. Eber and Wein Publishing is more honest and respectable plus very direct on what they will and won't do for you. I recommend them because they're honest professional and dedicated in making you happy without trying to twist your arm for more money.

6. What do you do if inspiration strikes in an inconvenient place (like car, restaurant, bathroom/shower, etc) and how do you capture that moment before it gets away from you?
Usually I keep paper pen or recording device so I can keep notes and never overlook anything.

7. Do you believe there is value in a review?
Yes, I think all reviews are valuable because they help with exposure and help build character for any future and present author.

8. If you had the chance to get one message out there to reach readers all over the world what would it be?
My message would be ‘never give up; not now or ever.’ Because life is a journey and you must live it to the fullest and never allow your fears or other people's shadiness cloud over your shinning light nor your blessings.

9. What is the intended audience for your book?
Adults, young, and old — anyone who comes from a humble beginning and those who are not from a supportive family structure. Because everyone has issues, but how we deal with them defines who we are as a person.

10. Tell us three fun facts about yourself?

I have a silly sense of humor. I enjoy hanging out with my mom, father, and brother, and I enjoy fishing.
