Book Blitz: The Shift by Genevieve Scholl

About the Author:

She is a small town girl with a heart for the country life. Very shy and pretty much a loner, but her writing helps her be more outgoing and talk to various people that she would otherwise have a hard time approaching. She doesn't write for the money or the fame, but rather to tell a story that needs to be told; whether that is her story or a character's story. As a lot of people know, from her various interviews, She started writing to express her anger and hurt over the bullying that she experienced in High School, but eventually she just realized that she loved to tell stories. She was born in Texas, grew up and still lives in Upstate New York, and wants to retire in Ireland.

About the Book:

Nothing about me is normal… …but what exactly is ‘normal’? Just because I have two dads and no mom, my name is Elliot Marcus Smith even though I’m a girl, and I was born from a test tube…
Does that mean I’m ‘abnormal’?
I say no.

But the sudden abilities that have been appearing since I turned eighteen sure do. Wounds are healing quickly, my vision has changed, as has my strength, and my sensitivities to other people’s emotions have become severely heightened. Add all that to the fact that I have been forgetting moments of my day as if they never happened, and it’s obvious that something strange is happening to me.

But what? What am I becoming?

Book Review: Panorama by Shilpi Chaklanobis

Title: Panorama
Author: Shilpi Chaklanobis
Publisher: Notion Press

About the Author:

Shilpi Chaklanobis hails from the beautiful city of Kanpur and has spent the majority of her adult life in Delhi. She currently heads the Digital Marketing division at an MNC. The amalgamation of her years spent amongst the quiet, calm streets of a small city and the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan like Delhi has lent her a unique perspective towards life. She aims to translate her experiences and understanding of human relationships into stories that not only move people but also resonate with them. She believes that the beauty of a story lies within its ability to be interpreted by the reader in the way they desire as is evident from her writing. Apart from writing, she spends her time devouring books by the dozen. This is her first endeavor as a writer and her writing not only shows promise, but also has a sense of sensitivity that compels you to think about the lives you touch every day.

Review:

Shilpi Chaklanobis shows a wealth of talent in her fiction debut, ‘Panorama,’ which is a collection of 15 well written short stories. Not limited to a single genre, the book strings together skillfully narrated tales that explore emotions in their variegated forms. The stories range widely in both tone and scope. With her simple yet strong style, the writer demonstrates not a singular narrative voice but a realistic chorus. Her work grapples with the issues of the day as she serves up slice after slice of agony, desire and melancholy.
What I found best about the book was that many of the entries demonstrate the human ability to endure crises and to regenerate afterward.
The language, while often simple and sometimes absolutely conversational, is always in the service of narrative. There are no triumphs of style over substance, the stories themselves are vital.
All the stories are serviceable, none bad.

Book Review: Ancient Chants for Modern Living by Aatmanika Ram

Title: Ancient Chants for Modern Living
Author: Aatmanika Ram
Publisher: Westland

About the Author:

Aatmanika Ram was born and raised in India and has lived and worked in several countries in North America, South East Asia and the Middle East. The exposure to varied cultures, her strong family-centered values and her innate curiosity have driven her to explore and write about her life experiences in “Shells on the Beach – an anthology”; her artistic taste and the desire to bring out the essence of good human values has found expression in the poetic fiction, “The Rose Petal Trail – A Sutra for timeless love”.

Review:

In the introductory chapter of her book, Ancient Chants for Modern Living, Aatmanika Ram has posed several questions that nettle people in their everyday life. One question that really got me going was why should life always be about making choices? It is a profound question with no simple answer. The writer agrees as much and does not claim to hand over a key to the reader to unlock the mysteries of life through her book. What she professes are time-tested nuggets of advice passed down through generations but which have somewhat lost their initial shine amidst the grindings of modern life.
Aatmanika attempts to harness the benefits of chanting shlokas to help overcome day to day problems affecting the modern world. It is widely known that chanting shlokas bring a lot of peace to the mind and body and this book helps the readers to understand how and where to use the shlokas to reap the benefits. In the words of the writer herself, everybody wants not just a grand finale for their lives but also a great beginning and memorable chapters in the middle. To achieve this we need proper guidance. Ancient Chants for Modern Living provides that much needed guidance in the form of a well written book.
One of the things I really enjoy in a book is practicality. I want something that applies to me. This book does exactly that. It applies to me, and you, today and every day. The intention of the book is not to fill the reader’s mind with information and make one feel overwhelmed, but to show that there is always a light during dark times. As such it is a neat package that combines recommendations for a balanced diet with healing yoga practices, chanting of shlokas and a correct attitude towards life for an overall individual growth.
Full of gems for both the young and the old, I recommend this book to anyone who feels lost and in need of some steering.

Book Review: A Road Not Traveled by J Alchem

Title: A Road Not Traveled
Author: J Alchem
Publisher: Story Mirror

Blurb:

Niorgast Stinvins, a motivational speaker by profession, wakes up one day to a strange phone call from an unknown person asking him to attend a meeting. There he is introduced to two more strangers, Doilin Flenk(Political advisor) and Bakintin Lenit (Journalist) and to a mission : "Can the world be a single country?" Thus begins a journey on a road not traveled, learning new lessons, unlearning a few and finally realizing that life is much more than what you think it is. Accompanying him on this journey are his personal demons, some ghosts of the past and few random memories of the near future with his loved ones. One day he reaches a stage where he doesn't know if he will be able to live or not. Can the world be a single country? Will they be able to take this mission from a closed room to a goal post? What circumstances are they going to face? How will their journey be?

Author Bio:

J Alchem is a voracious reader and critically acclaimed author. He is the winner of StoryMirror 2015 (a nationwide writing competition), NaNoWriMo -2015 and super hero storyteller (2014). He has written in several magazines and newspapers and received the appreciation for the same. His stories have been published in numerous anthologies such as blank Space, Love Bytes and Mighty Thoughts and on various online channels. He is actively involved in writing quotes and short write-ups which have often seen circulated among youth in Facebook, Whatzapp and other social media platforms. Review:

J Alchem’s debut novel, A Road Not Traveled, brought to my mind Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Not Taken’ which is about the human tendency to look back and attribute blame to minor events in one's life, or to attribute more meaning to things than they may deserve. A comparison between the two works arose because I find so much similarity between the titles. But then the similarity ends there. In a stark contrast, Alchem talks of a journey that hasn’t been accomplished yet – a journey where people work together to turn this world we live in, into a single country. Don’t get the writer wrong. He isn’t suggesting a military coup. What he means by his ‘one-country world’ statement is that what if there were no boundaries between countries and each neighbor was more than eager to help the other one out in case of trouble. Where leaders acted selflessly and worked towards a unified goal. Perhaps something on the lines of utopia!
The concept of a utopian society isn’t possible. At least that’s what I learnt in my Political Science classes. It is a paradox unto itself. Yet, while reading this book and mulling over the concept of a one-country world I felt that even though utopia isn’t a possibility, there’s no denying the fact that if countries acted like families instead of rivals, this dream would no longer be unattainable! Alchem’s novel tries to explore this virgin ground through his protagonist and other characters. Look carefully and you’ll notice the points the author wants to make – about family, relationships, individuality, and the all-pervasive desire for a better world that laces life if we only look a little closely.
A bold attempt based mostly on marginally explored concepts rather than statistical support. I feel this is indeed a consciousness-raising work.

Author Interview: R.A.Carter-Squire, Author of An Altered Course

Is Time Travel possible?
Well the short answer is; no. However, it depends on your point of view and how much time is involved. I believe that situations like finding your lost keys could be considered time travel because you have to put yourself back to that moment when you lost them. Jumping forward or backward five, ten, fifty, or a hundred years is definitely not possible—yet.
What made you write this book?
My best friend came to visit me one day in 1986 and that was the last time I saw or heard from him. We were inseparable during high school and for a few years after. Once I got married, he didn’t hang around much. A year ago, I wondered where he was and the idea struck me; ‘What if I could go back in time to find out what happened to him?’ The rest as they say is history. There is one more remarkable note to add to this story. On the day this story was first published as Dancing to a Different Tune, my friend contacted me. It turns out he was living in the same city as my family and I for the past fifteen years and I didn’t know it. Now when I talk to him, it’s as if we just picked up where we left off, for me anyway.
Another detail, the main character’s father having Alzheimer’s, I experienced with my own father. There were days when I’d go to visit him and he was experiencing the world as he lived it in his thirties. It was tough on the whole family, especially my mother.
Can you tell us what An Altered Course is about?
Sure, it begins with the main character, Michael Eldridge, as a young boy. He’s living through the day his best friend, Joe disappears in 1957. Then we jump ahead thirty years to find Michael as head of the largest computer manufacturer in the world. He’s devoted his life to developing technology. The motivation; his consuming desire to find a way back in time to learn the truth about how and why his best friend disappeared. Now, on the verge of completing a project for NASA that will allow them to communicate instantly through space and gives him the power to jump back in time; however, life conspires to thwart his most cherished desire. His father becomes ill, the woman of his desires wants him, and a competitor is planning to steal his discovery.
In a deeper sense though, it is a story about relationships and how we prioritise them against our work. We’ve all lost someone and most of us would give anything to have them back in our lives. Michael has excluded emotional contacts with people except for his remaining best friend. Now, the impending loss of his father and the growing need to be with a woman are distracting him. He’s learning to be inclusive, something most people learn by the time they become adults.
It’s also about being in control of our lives. Michael has controlled everything in his life for the last twenty years, but now he feels like a leaf blowing in the wind or a man drowning in a raging river. Nothing makes sense and he has to make decisions without any experience.
Are the characters based on anyone in particular?
Well no because then I’d have to pay them royalties. The truth is that Michael might be a little like me. History, science, and computers fascinate me. I’m happy being alone, but I enjoy my life with my wife and family. Yes, I’ve been in situations that made me feel like I had no control and I came through them. I’d like to go into space and if I could move through time, I’d be willing to see what happens next in my life.
The other characters are loosely based on people I know. Their actions, attitudes, and other characteristics I used to make them seem human. The research scientist in the story has a habit of scratching his head when he’s nervous. That trait was a habit my son had when he was younger. I’ve never known a woman with red hair, personally. Heather’s actions are built on movie characters and hearsay.
Is this book going to have a sequel?
No, sorry. I just finished the first draft of another book that will have a sequel or two, but you’ll have to wait.
Do you use an outline or write by the seat of your pants?
You know, I’ve tried to use an outline and I can’t form a whole story at the beginning. I usually start out with an idea—like going back in time to find out what happened to your best friend—and then imagine an ending. Call that an outline if you like, but I call it the trip.
I know the start—roughly. The main character becomes clear in my mind and what his/her motivation is in relation to the ending. Then I’ll start writing. Other people come along to populate the world, helping or hindering, but always driving toward the finish. A road map.
I never edit until after the draft is finished. Well, that’s not true. Usually, at the beginning of my writing day, I’ll read the last paragraph or two from the previous day to get the story in my mind again and if I find errors, I’ll fix them.
And before you ask, no I don’t have a set time for writing each day. I try to spend eight to ten hours a week, average. My work, wife, family, and friends (not in that order) have first claim on my time. This way, I never feel guilty about not writing on any given day.I never have a deadline either.
What made you write your first book?
That’s actually a funny moment for me. I read many books, especially horror and thriller. I’ll read non-fiction books about anything that fascinates me at the moment too. Having said that, one day I was reading a book published in 1968, I think. It was about the most haunted places in England. Non-fiction, it said, but the narrative read like the phone book. Boring!
I decided then that if someone published those words, then someone out there would certainly be willing to publish a story of mine. Four months later, after much grumbling from my wife and family, and I had a novel.
I didn’t know about editing. I thought the publisher would do all of the heavy lifting. I didn’t know about rejection. After half a dozen no’s,I threw the book in a drawer for twenty years.
A new idea came to me, but this time I was prepared. I wrote the new story over three years, two of them researching the historic details. This was fiction, but I wanted/ needed to be true to history. Editing, revising, and designing a cover and I finally published my first book.

Hot on the heels of that triumph, I dug out the original manuscript from twenty years earlier. It was awful. I’ll rewrite it, I said. After six months, I published my second book. And now comes the third, with a fourth on the way.

***** By Summer Girl on May 29, 2016

For her debut novel, C. Tuttle gave us an interesting take on the typical teenage angst, and I found it QUITE enjoyable! Aubrie, Paige, and Makayla have been friends since kindergarten, and now, on the cusp of graduating high school, find themselves faced with not only the uncertainty of the future, the ever changing emotional upheavals of their relationships with one another, but also with the unpredictable forces of Nature.Part coming of age story, part supernatural story, part new adult, A Storm Within is a fun and unique read and I can't wait to read the next one!

When I first heard about A Storm Within I was pretty well hooked. The premise for this book is so unique and fun! I'm not normally big on teen books, not sure why...I guess it's just not my thing. However, I knew I was going to be reading this one! While the characters constantly switching attitudes and repeated cheating drove me mad...it was accurate. It was the life of a teen. It was real.

13393022_10153734262328207_1318807488_n

These characters are developed so beautifully that after only a few chapters I felt like I knew them. I may not exactly like them...I mean come on who really likes a cheater? but I knew who they were, I knew what they wanted, I even knew what their fears were. Put simply: they are good characters. I ADORE a book that can drag me in so deep that I have such strong feelings and reactions to the characters! Trust me when I say that C. Tuttle pulled that off and more. I spent the majority of this book screaming at my kindle trying to figure out what in the world these characters were thinking! The relationship between Brie and Kayla is breath-taking....and annoying as crap! If you two love each other so much...well stop being douches to one another dang it!! It's not that hard I promise! (See what I mean about getting emotional over the characters! I felt like I was back in high school standing between two of my friends that were constantly making bad choices when it came to their relationship.) Okay..moving on from my love-hate relationship with the characters. All you need to know is that they are extremely well developed, have wonderfully individual voices that let you know who each one is and what their personalities are...basically these characters are REAL! They come across as someone you may have gone to school with and just didn't know.

Author Interview: Pavithra Ramesh, Author of No Time To Pause

About the Author

She has been an excellent academic performer emerging as the second topper in school (Commerce Stream) in her CBSE Board exams. Commitment and perseverance is her basic mantra. Based in Dubai, she has written many articles for a Sharjah Daily newspaper. She has been the PR Event head of the Commerce Core Team in College and an active participant in cultural programmes in the field of dance. She has been a part of the entrepreneurship cell in college and was involved in the editorial team of Bangalore e-cell. Writing is her passion. She now ventures with her first book ‘Too young to regret’.  She believes that desire is the best driving force to success and trusts her instincts to find her goals and aspirations.

Interview

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer/ a storyteller?
There was no sudden realisation as such. I always had a passion for writing and wrote small articles. As I developed a story and wanted it to reach out to the young adults, I decided to pen it down and get it published.

What are your current/future projects?
I will soon start working on my next venture. Trying to finalise the genre and set a plot.

Do you believe there is value in a review? Do you believe they are under rated, over rated, or don’t matter at all?
I completely believe that there is immense value in reviews. Any rating or review gives a clear feedback on the piece of work. It helps renew and refresh one’s thought process and acts as a learning guide. The ratings are subjective to each person but gives an idea to the artist as to how each one perceives the work done. After all, when one reaches out to the public, it becomes important to gauge their response and work towards better quality.

What is your biggest fear about having a book published?
There is no fear as such. But as an author, the only thought that revolves is if the book would be able to achieve its aim and reach out to the target audience with the right acceptance.

What is the intended audience for you book?
The intended audience for my book ‘No time to Pause’ is youth. The story revolves around a young adult living alone, away from her family and the experiences she encounters. It aims to inspire the young adults on how life keeps moving on and there is no time to waste on stumbling blocks.

Give us a fun fact about your book?
The book has a lot of incidents which involves the college life of the protagonist. It also includes fun moments with her roommates, the typical young girls’ drama and the highs and lows of love and friendship.
It makes it easy for the young ones to connect and relate to the book.

Were your characters based off real life people/events or did you make it all up?
Many characters are based on real life people but the main character is fictional, the girl with unique thoughts and perceptions having a true impact on the protagonist.

What is the best piece of advice you have received, as a writer, till date?
The best advice I have received is to take criticism as an opportunity to learn. Not only as a writer, but in any field of work, the courage to accept negative feedback and find ways to improve and sharpen one’s talent is very important.

Did any of your characters inherit some of your own quirks?
Yes. The character Aditi reflects my thoughts and views to an extent. Any book for that matter echoes the perceptions of the author.

What makes a good story, why?
I feel any story is good if the reader finds it easy to connect to what has been illuminated. When the reader can relate and has the urge to continue reading till the end, somewhere down the line, the story has achieved its purpose.

What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book(s), but nobody has? Write it out here, and then answer it.
I’m so glad to have been asked this. Yes, I wish someone asked me if my roommates were really as crazy as they were portrayed in the book.
And the answer is yes. Many of the incidents mirror the fun and frolic of our life in the Paying Guest and that was something real.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers?
Yes. I would like to say that ‘No time to Pause’ is a simple book of a young girl.  Please do read the book and send in your feedback to rpavithra1@gmail.com. I would like to sharpen my writing skills with the help of your reviews. And trust me, the book is fun. I’m sure you would love it!

Blog Tour: Midnight Owl by Viv Drewa

Midnight Owl (Joe Leverette Mystery Boook #1)

When the dismembered body of a young woman is found Detectives Joe Leverette and Philip Marsden are assigned the case. After investigating the Port Huron, Michigan area where the six body parts were found there’s a twist in the case: The murderer goes after each individual who found the parts, one by one.

Leverette becomes interested in one of the women, Carole Sage, a sensitive, but because of the case he’s not able to take it any further. Everyone on the police force sees his infatuation, but Carole does not.

Each of the six witnesses has a dream about the murderer removing the particular body part they found the night. They are startled awake and hear an owl hoot three times. None of them want to reveal their dream to the detectives.

Carole sees the actual murder and each murder as it happens to the witnesses. The police chief, Billingsley, understands her ‘gift’ and sets up a sting to catch him. It fails and they have to regroup to think of something else. Two witnesses are dead and they don’t want a third to die.
This books is for 18+ due to the violence.

Author Bio:

The Arts   are very strong on both sides of my family. My father’s side were the singers. All have such beautiful voices and from what I’ve been told has been strong all the up the family tree. Dad wanted to be an opera singer but after getting married, drafted to the army during the Korean Conflict, coming home and become a father to my late brother and me dashed his hopes. He did have the most beautiful baritone I ever heard. I can sing but I’m a tenor and always felt awkward that I had to stand with the men on the church choir. My daughter, Sofia, has a beautiful soprano voice.
Mom’s side were all storytellers. My first inkling was my grandmother who would make up stories to tell us when were little. She didn’t like the stories in the books so she told her own. My mom was also an excellent storyteller and poet. She won several contests for her poetry. I tried poetry but found I preferred writing stories. My daughter is also very good at this but she doesn’t want to write. She’d make a fantastic horror author, too! Maybe one day????

I knew, at age 9, I wanted to be a writer after reading James Robert Green’s “A Whistling Sword”. I was so fascinated by his storytelling and how he used an actual historical character, Genghis Khan, in this book. Everything I read previously were Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys so this was a real treat.

I was never able to start writing because I had no support and felt discourage even though I won awards for my work. It wasn’t until I had two mini-strokes in 2013 that I started. My doctor wanted me to play puzzle games and such so I asked him if writing would work. He said yes and “The Angler and the Owl” came to be.

Since then I’ve written “The Owl of the Sipan Lord”, a short story “From the Pages of Grandfather’s Life” which I’m planning on turning into a novella, and have just finished “Midnight Owl” (A Joe Leverette Mystery Book 1) which will be out Oct 10. This was originally going to be a trilogy but as I wrote more ideas came to me so it’ll be a series. How many books I don’t know, I’m sure I’ll think of more things to keep it going.

I took creative and journalism courses to help transition to fulfill my dream of becoming a writer. I worked as an intern for Port Huron's 'The Times Herald", and also wrote, edited and did the layout for the Blue Water Multiple Sclerosis newsletter "Thumb Prints."

I also write a blog promoting my fellow authors.

Oh I almost forgot! I love owls!!!

These eleven authors have put a lot into their stories. A lot of thought to get the right word in the right place to provide an accurate picture in your mind of what he or she wants you to see. There are only 26 letters in the alphabet, but put together right the possibilities are endless. We hope you enjoy the stories provided and they help you escape for a minute or two from your reality.

Christmas Edition 2014

These stories run the gamut of emotions and genres, from outright horror to more subtle drama. With a recurring theme of Christmas, they present a multi-faceted viewpoint on the writer's take on the festive season.

Once again, we stand before you to offer our work for your pleasure. The stories contained in this volume, as in the others, have been written for you to read. They may at turns excite you, terrify you or make you think; that is our goal as writers. In keeping with the season, we are pleased to present new author Lorraine Carey in this volume.

Volume 4

The most powerful thing a person can do is to share their life with complete strangers. A writer does this by writing in a way to make your world fade. As an author progresses in their journey to becoming the best they can be, we like to think we are pulling you the reader along with us. This project is about that. Writers write so readers can read. That is the idea anyway. We do appreciate you the reader coming into our worlds for a few minutes. We hope what we have written will take you away from your day just long enough to forget about it.
Once again, we come before you to stand behind you, the reader, to invite you into our worlds that we have built or in some cases destroy. We hope you enjoy this edition as much as the others. Not read the others? They are available as well.

Volume 6

Once again, we come before you to stand behind you, the reader, to invite you into our worlds that we have built or in some cases destroy. We hope you enjoy this edition as much as the others. Not read the others? They are available free as well.
