The name on the file folder, J. McKenna, gave me a chill. He had been wounded in the line of duty—shot by a bank robbery suspect. Seeing the name reminded me of where I came from and why the need for hiding existed. I pushed the memories down. I’m not that person anymore. That person doesn’t exist. It wasn’t necessary to touch the necklace underneath my sweater as a reminder, but it had become a nervous habit. The locket was the only thing I had kept from that life.

The door opened and Sheila showed my patient in. As my eyes met his, my heart stopped for what seemed like hours. After reading the file, I was afraid of this. How many Jackson McKenna’s could there be? The hair is shorter and the face is older, but it’s him. I would know those eyes anywhere. Jackson McKenna. He was my first love and indirectly, the reason I had to use a cane to walk farther than across the room.
I cleared my throat and stood, reaching out to shake his hand as I would with any new patient, hoping he didn’t recognize me.
“I’m Dr. Parker. Please make yourself comfortable, Officer McKenna, and we can get started.”
When I realized his right arm was in a sling and we couldn’t shake hands, I dropped mine back to my side. Picking up my notepad and pen, I hoped he didn’t see the way my hands were shaking.
“It’s actually Detective, not Officer.”
He sat on the couch across from me, observing with those hazel eyes that have haunted my dreams for ten years, and then he shook his head.
“You remind me of someone I used to know a long time ago.”

He chuckled again. Relaxed and straddling his bike, he gazed at her. Smart and beautiful. Most guys would think he was off his rock, tempting fate or her ire. “I’ll take that chance. Let’s do things the old-fashioned way.”
“You make me nuts,” she finally blurted.
An honest laugh erupted from his chest, seeing he was twisting her into a ball of crazy. “This is good training for you, Miss Stines.”
“How?” she barked at him. Her brow squished together.
“Although you say you don’t want to live the life of luxury, I think you’re used to getting what you want.”
Her knuckles collided with her waist. “Are you calling me spoiled?”
“Are you?”
She took a quick step toward him and leaned over. Within an inch of his mouth, her voice slipped into a silky timbre. “No, SEAL, I’m not. You can keep your kisses. I don’t want—”
Execute. His hands palmed her cheeks and his mouth powered down on hers. Every ounce of blood rushed from his head to his heart. Her gorgeous body melted against his, submitting. Holy God in heaven! He’d been right. Kissing this woman coiled his lust tight.
Their kiss blazed and then ended with a slow burn before he gently pulled away. The corner of his mouth curved. “See you Friday.” He kick-started the engine to life.
“Friday…” she said meekly, gazing at him, still stunned.
      
      He winked at her. Before his lust started talking him into screwing up the start to something incredible, he wheeled around the fountain and rode away.

Book Review: The Conspiracy At Meru by Shatrujeet Nath

Review:

Not every book in a series is awaited with bated breath by readers. Especially not those that don’t live up to the promise of the initial installment(s). While writing a series, the mistake that most writers make is that for the furtherance of their story, they either tone down the first installment while planning mostly for the next ones. If not, after having written the first book, they flounder. Obviously, the second book falls way back in its deliverance — particularly if the series was an afterthought. Fortunately for us, Shatrujeet Nath made no such mistake. The pro that he is, Nath has given his readers only the very best from his caddy.

This latest installment in the Vikramaditya Veergatha series picks up the story so far told     seamlessly. There’s no hiccup and it’s more like turning the next chapter albeit a year and a half later. (Not for me though. I read both the books back to back. Lucky me!)

The deadly Halahala weapon — created from the same poison that Lord Shiva had swallowed during the churning of the Ocean of Milk — still lies with its guardian Vikramaditya, a mortal chosen by the Lord himself. The battle between humans, Devas and Asuras has left Vikramaditya’s kingdom weakened and vulnerable. Moreover, both Indra and Shukracharya are not yet done in their quest for the deadly weapon. Amidst all this chaos the kingdoms of Magadha and Heheya present another set of complication for the protagonist. Not one to step down, Vikramadithya and his council of nine go around helping with damage control. They try to gather support, heal the wounded, and train the samsaptakas. 

But not all is grim and bloody. There’s a chance for a sweet love story to blossom amidst the bloodshed. It almost comes as a relief between the ongoing tensions. The best thing is that this relationship between Vikramaditya and his lady doesn’t seem fabricated. It’s not the writer’s desperate attempt at holding the reader’s interest. Love can, and does, bloom at the most unexpected of circumstances.

Nath keeps Vikramaditya busy falling in love with Vishakha, battling the evil Asuras, keeping the Devas at bay, and still finding the courage to counter Shoorasena and Satyaveda’s agenda in this romp that rivals masters of the genre for inventive, magical storytelling. The story zips along with thrilling and action packed scenes, culminating in the perfect stage for the next adventure in a brand new book.

Newcomers to the series will race back to the first volume and eagerly await a third installment.

Book Review: It's Not About You by Ratna Vira

Ratna Vira’s ‘It’s Not About You’ charts a family’s journey wrought through emotional upheaval at the face of a tragedy that befalls them uninvited.
Single mother Samaira juggles her corporate job and Aksh, her teenage son, even as she defies society, disapproving in-laws and her own family. But when Aksh is found battered and beaten at school, she finds herself questioning her role as a mother. Faced with a conspiracy of silence from the school, she delves deeper only to discover the murky world of bullying, the secret life of teenagers and the emotional distance between parents and children.
In her pursuit of truth and justice, Samaira ends up challenging the power equations of politics, wealth, and influence.
Though in this condensed version of the novel the story appears to be unilateral, there’s much that goes unsaid. And it is this ‘unsaid’ that sets apart the book in the literary milieu. Ratna has tackled the vast and disturbing issue of bullying with such dexterity that it keeps the reader thinking even after the book ends. What is to be noted here is that it’s not just Aksh, Jay, or Priya who have been harassed. Samaira had her own share of bullying in her own family. The setting can be anything, the circumstances may also differ, what remains the same are the bullies who are drunk with power, position, authority, and money.
The story is sordid, grim, and beautiful all at once. It leaves behind a message for the readers — only by looking beyond the social, class, and economic differences can we become good humans. The dirty game of politics has seeped into our very bloodstream and it is time that we rise above and beyond. We need to fight our own demons, stand up to what’s inappropriate and not cower at the face of bullying of any sorts.
Ratna’s writing technique is simple yet profound. She knows how to elicit the desired emotions from her readers, keeping them hooked to the very end. But there are a few things that I couldn’t overlook. The novel drags at certain places to the point of becoming boring. In several chapters nothing actually happens. The story seems repetitive. The ending is quite rushed. The entire story actually unfolds itself in mere paragraphs. However, ‘It’s Not About You’ is a must read and I’d recommend it to all and sundry.

I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.

I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the books that are currently available and hope you will enjoy reading them just as much. And of course, there will be many more stories to come.

Book Review: Wreath And Other Stories by Sangeeta Mahapatra

Review:

Sangeeta Mahapatra’s ‘Wreath and Other Stories’ is a catalogue of suspense and horror. The ten different stories, all aimed to please and tease a lover of the genre, holds quite a bit of promise. There’s more than momentary interest in this collection. Writing horror stories can be challenging. Those who handle these materials with any style are in the minority. Sangeeta’s writing, if not above, is at par with that league.

This elegant anthology offers ten pleasurably macabre surprises — some familiar while others not so. The book is less about the monsters we can see and more about those we can’t. In the writer’s own words, “These stories prod at our private fears, bring them out of the closet, and show the fallout of this fear.” This is an apt way of describing the book and I couldn’t have done justice to this review had I not quoted her.

Sangeeta spins an authentic nightmare about a promise not kept and its repercussions in ‘Red Moon.’ Whereas there’s a sense of doom in ‘Captive,’ ‘Wreath,’ and ‘The Wait,’ emotions like love, hate, obsession, and paranoia play the upper hand in ‘Malevolent,’ ‘Fey,’ ‘Tick Tock,’ and ‘Déjà vu.’ While these stories evoke a sense of gloom and forebodingness, ‘Artistic Spirit’ and ‘Snapshot’ are comparatively lighter in tone.  

Usually in horror story collections, there’s no shortage of gore for splatterpunk fans, but the truth remains that the most effective stories are also among the most understated. Clearly, Sangeeta understands this. No wonder there aren’t any guts and blood oozing, half devoured victims in this book. What we have is subtlety. This is what puts her collection apart. It’s astute and entertaining.

Sangeeta Mahapatra is the executive editor of a national business magazine. She has a doctoral degree in International Relations and has previously worked as a research fellow, specializing in Terrorism Studies. She is currently based in Kolkata, India, working on a book on the counter-terrorism strategies of India, Israel, and the United States of America. In 1999, her first book of short stories, Miasma, was published by Chowringhee Prakashini Press, Kolkata. Wreath and Other Stories is her second collection of short stories.
