Blog Hop - International Authors' Day!

I Blame Harry Potter

I have been an avid reader since I learned my alphabets. From Noddy to Naughtiest Girl in School to Famous Five to Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew to Agatha Christie... I progressed with time. My main interest lay in Mystery and Thrillers. Anything that had the mystery/thriller tag to it, I would gobble it up.

Then Harry Potter hit the market and as the craze overtook everyone around me, I failed to understand how even the grown ups could be charmed by Magic and Dragons? They were meant for kids - like fairy tales. Then while babysitting a kid, I ended up watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets back to back. Well, I was a goner - I thought, if I enjoyed the movie so much, no wonder everyone is taken by the series so much. So I borrowed the first four books and there was no looking back. Soon I owned the four books and was impatiently for The Order of the Phoenix to release.

In the meantime, what could I do but pick up other fantasy series to quench my thirst for magic and dragons! Yeah... Years later, with all the books out and all the movies released, I am still suffering from Harry Potter hangover. I have read dozens of other series, but none can be compared to it! From Mysteries being my favourite genre, suddenly I find myself picking a fantasy book before a mystery with so much hope...

Please guys, recommend me some more fantasy series for me to get my hands on!

  1. Do books about ninjas count as fantasy? I mean, they do some pretty fantastical stuff! I've always been more into sci-fi, myself, starting with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I could never really get into all the elves and dragons and hobbits and whatnot -- too many characters to keep track of. Happy International Authors Day!

  2. If you haven't read the Iron Druid chronicles--that would be my first recommendation. I thought the writing was clever and I'm so glad I got past my cover snobbery to read the first book--I was hooked. It was my first introduction to urban fantasy and I tend to be reading a lot of urban fantasies now :)

  3. Ohh my gosh, I remember when Harry Potter came out, my Grandpa actually bought me the first book, I think it was for my birthday. I got to read it once and then he sold it for way more than he bought it for. I was sooo upset. Then all the movies came out and he bought me the first three. I felt a bit better haha

  5. Love Harry Potter!!! If you're looking for a good fantasy read, I highly recommend Jen Wylie's The Broken Ones series. Kinda puts me in the mind of books like LOTR but on a young adult level. First one is Broken Aro :)

  6. So funny how the least likely thing gets us hooked! I'm not into fantasy though, so I have no recommendations for you. Love some mysteries though. :) Writer’s Mark

  9. Have you read Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series? Or Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydian? Both about 30 years old, both great!
